Can I negotiate the deductible on my car repairs with the repair shop?
I have to have some damage repaired on my car after a hit and run. My deductible is $400. What are the chances that the repair shop would be willing to eat some of that cost if I try to haggle?

That can easily be done with a lot of shops. With the economy so bad lots of them will bend a little. But,the savings has to come from somewhere and that may be giving them free license to cut a corner by repairing a part that is supposed to be changed.Or some other trick.

get only cash together -no checks and see what you can do/better know the guy a little

You can negotiate anything. One angle to try is pay him in CASH. Also talk to a couple of shops… When you find one that is hungry, they might bite.
This being said… You get what you pay for…
Good Luck Mike

Think small independently owned shops. Alot of times certain parts will be included in the estimate that dont necessarily have to be replaced, or may have such a small amount of damage you will not mind it the way it is. Also, smaller shops will be more receptive to/have more experience with finding parts, maybe used, at a much cheaper price than the estimate allowed for. Just talk to the guy. I once hid my entire 1000 dollar deductible by letting the bodyman get a used bed and not replacing the individual body panels/one ford factory rim that was involved in the wreck. The rim was not damaged. I didnt pay anything out of pocket and the bodyshop still got the full estimate amount.

At this present moment in time with the economy situation being what it is, it is worth a try at several places before you conclude on one.
