What kind of sport motorcycle is the best quality for $5000 or under?

I am looking for a used bike for college with good gas mileage and looks sporty. I don’t have my motorcycle license yet, so a beginner type bike would be nice as well. Any suggestions?

i just bought a 1998 harley sportster, with 6800 miles, for 4500. i live in ohio. i have had a few sport bikes (2005 R1, 1996 YZF600 and some others), but have grown tired of leaning over. i especially didnt like having a passenger. the harley has been great so far (needs tires and a few other tid-bits) and its easier to get your money back when you sell. plus, a harley is a harley… oh, and i hear some people are getting 56mpg on their sportsters.. i havent checked mine yet. $15 a fill up is a lot better than $60 or $70 in a car…

Kawasaki Ninja 250. It costs $3,500 brand new for the newly-redesigned 2008 version. The gas mileage is around 70 mpg. No need to look elsewhere, I’ve read all the reviews for it and it will probably be my first bike too.

    Yamaha FZ6
    used 04 $2990
    used 05 $3500
    used 06 $4490

very sporty, same engine as an R6, fast, 55 MPG, 150 MPH top speed, lightweight, easy to ride and handle, comfortable upright seating position where you will be comfortable for long rides, very low maintenance, valve adjustments not needed until 15K miles.
This bike will outperform any size cruiser bike, will keep up with any crotch rocket and its very easy to ride and this bike will make a beginner look like a pro riding it.

Buy a Harley Davidson you can get a sportster for around $5000.00 and it hold a very good resale value. The part for this bike are plentiful and the fuel mileage is around 50 miles to the gallon.

I’m really liking the 250 ninja for a beginner who wants a sport bike. Light, user friendly, relaxed handle bar height, 50mpg, and will destroy the ironically named unsporty Harley Sportster that is nearly 4 times the size engine, nearly twice the weight, and nearly 4 times the price. You can get a spanking new one for thousands less than a used Sportster….and you don’t have to dress like the village people to ride one.

    250 ninja 0-60 5.7 1/4 mile 14.6

    883 Harley Sportster 0-60 6.6 1/4 mile 15.56

A used 1000cc Ironhead Sportster would be ideal for that price range and riding experience.
