What is a car creeper ?

Doing something in your car while lying in your car is called flat backing. It is expected for auto-repair shops to have hydraulics to lift cars and work underneath the hood, facilitating any task that needs to be done from the underside. This can be compared to lubricants and oil shops that work on the car’s underside while in a pit or in a vault level making it relatively comfortable while working.

Vault levels, pits or hydraulic lifts can be too expensive for a residential garage installation often done by the do-it-yourself mechanics. However, you can avoid this costly heavy-duty equipment by jacking your car and setting up jack stands under your car. Most carowners who do maintenance by themselves creep on their backs while working underneath their vehicle; of course, this option will definitely be dirty and uncomfortable. If you are one of the home mechanics who usually experience this kind of mess and uneasiness, a car creeper is the perfect equipment for you.

A regular car creeper has four sets of wheels providing easy maneuvering underneath the car and cushioned surface where you can lay your back in comfort. The material used for car creeper’s cushions usually are vinyl or synthetic fabric, making it easy to clean if stained by car oil or other stains that come from repairing a car. Usually, car creepers have headrest built in to it, while more expensive car creepers have an adjustable headrest that you can set the height for your neck’s comfort. Besides the flexible headrest, high-quality car creepers can have tool trays installed on the side providing easy access on tools and equipments needed in the car’s maintenance.

In using a car creeper, you have to use a floor jack to lift the car and set up jack stands, make sure to properly set up the stands to ensure your safety should the floor jack unpredictably collapse. Remember that in order to fit underneath the car, you will have to jack the car higher than you would usually, since the car creeper raises you quite a few inches off the ground. Next to the car, lie on your back with the car creeper sustaining your back, head, and buttocks; this position leaves your legs free to push the car creeper along and steer it to where you want to go. Just roll your way under the car, and you are ready to work.
