How does apple know if you open your macbook?

I recently bought a macbook pro and i want to upgrade the hard drive, but the nearest apple store is 40 min away from me 🙁 I would do it myself but i have apple care and i dont wanna void the warranty. Is there a way apple can see if you have opened your macbook or not?

Btw its a macbook pro 13 inch 2.26 ghz 2009 model.

Thanks!

dont . it will void your warrenty. go to apple and see if they can install the ram for you . and yes. if you go there cause something is wrong, they will know that thats a different ram, also, if the screws are damaged or something, then they will.

Hard drives are user-upgradable on MacBook Pros. You can upgrade it yourself without voiding the warranty.

However, beware that if you damage the computer while upgrading, that damage is NOT covered under the warranty. So if you don’t feel comfortable getting inside your computer, you should find someone to help.

There are great guides on how to upgrade Macs at http://www.ifixit.com . They also provide information on the tools you will need (for this task you’ll need a special screwdriver that you can get from iFixit for a couple bucks) and how to stay safe (unplug the battery!).

There are also instructions on upgrading the RAM and hard drive contained within your materials you got with your MacBook Pro. However, the iFixit instructions are much easier to follow.

Also, keep in mind that the upgraded drive won’t be covered by your warranty if it fails (obviously).

If you break something while you’re doing the upgrade, it will probably be very obvious once they open your computer. That’s how they know you’ve done it.

On a side note, when I bought my 13″ MBP, the salesperson (“genius”) told me some nonsense about how opening my computer would void the warranty. This is not true. I think he was just trying to get me to buy the 4GB model (since I told him I might upgrade the RAM later).

EDIT: I thought I’d cite a source, just to solidify my point. There is an excellent answer to this exact question from an Apple Store employee over at Askville [1].

I see no reason to upgrad the hard drive. If you need more storage get an external hard drive. You can get a 1T hard drive and be safe. You’re suppose to backup your data and need one.
