How do you skim floating discs off a motorbike?
I am wondering how to skim a floating brake disc off a motorbike. Because the disc has the ability to float and therefore centralise itself within the brake caliper, will the disc not just push away from the tool?
I want to make a mandrel to accept the disc mount spider thingy for my lathe but need to know if it is possible to face them off this way before I do so.
Thanks in advance.

When you turn the disc it is off the bike and is not a floating disc anymore. The disc is removed from its mount and turned on a special adapter.

Motorbike discs are so thin to start with I would not recommend skimming them.
I think bike discs are stainless steel so this will be more difficult to machine than car discs which are cast steel

brake disc’s are hard & tough. they will quickly dull even carbide tool bits.
you can bolt them to a face plate & refinish them with a tool post grinder if they arent warped very much but dont take more than about .020 (1/2 mm)from each side or they will probably be below tolerance on thickness.
if you try it with a carbide tool, grind & set the tool with about the same sharp hook & relief you would use for cutting aluminum & use plenty of coolant.

I’ve cut motorcycle brake discs in the past.
They may look nice at first, but the tooling weakens the metal and they ware as fast as the brake pads.

I’d recommend scuffing them with a 400 grit sanding paper or stone just to break the glaze of wear. If you aren’t careful you’ll make the brakes noisy by improper lathe feed. Take it to a local machine shop. The surface must be almost scratch free for metalic pads they have these days.

HELLO
THE FLOATING PART IS THE CALLIPER
ON A NON FLOATING THE BRAKE PADS ARE PUSHED BY BOTH SIDE VIA PISTONS 1 OR 2 EACH SIDE
THE FLOATING TYPE HAS FIXED PAD IE NO PISTON ON ONE SIDE AND 1 OR 2 PISTONS ON OTHER SIDE, AS PISTONS PUSH PADS AGAINST DISK THE DISK IS PULLED AGAINST PADS ON OTHER SIDE.
YOU WILL NEED TO DROP WHOLE WHEEL FROM BIKE AND REMOVE DISK FROM WHEEL.
OVER TO YOU, CAN YOU MOUNT OR TAKE TO PRO.
