How do I connect 2 Apple laptops together using one as a external drive only?
I’d like to know how to connect my old Apple laptop to my new one for file transfer by using it as an external drive. Eventually I’ll remove the hard drive from the old machine and put in its own housing purely for storage use.

Ok, try this: When restarting your old mac, hold down the letter “t” on your keyboard. Let go when the firewire icon appears (it may or may not make a noise, I don’t remember). Then you can connect your macs with a firewire cable and the old mac will be treated as an external hard drive and you can easily transfer files over.

I think you should try to make a network. so you can access the harddrive from any computer connected securely. there is also online storage these days too.
