How does an alternator work ?

One of the most vital parts of an automobile is the alternator. This device is one of the main components of a car’s charging system, which produces power for numerous devices on a car. Alternator is one type of generator that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. Even if the battery in your car supplies energy, most of the electrical components in a vehicle needs stable energy stream coming from the alternator.

The name alternator was derived from the alternating current, which is the type of power it produces. Mainly, an alternator is a mechanical device; it includes wheels, a pulley, wires and brushes, hooks to the crankshaft, and runs through the battery. The works are very simple. If the car is running, the crankshaft turns and the crankshaft run the alternator, which transforms the motion of the crankshaft into electricity. The electricity coming from the alternator runs numerous devices in the car such as the air conditioning, cooling fan, wipers, headlights, defogger and radio. In short, the alternator produces constant high voltage electricity, which is very essential for an automobile to run properly.

Alternator works with the belt connected to the crankshaft, the device that makes the magnet in the alternator turn. The moving magnets produce the electrostatic field or electricity. There is a voltage regulator connected to the electricity the alternator generates to keep the voltage steady.

Even if the car’s alternator malfunctions or die, the car will still run, but only for a short while. In this case, the car will be using the power coming from the battery alone and the car will stop running as soon as the power on the battery runs out. This makes it hard to tell if your alternator is having a problem. To make sure that the alternator is running properly, always check the belt if cracked or loose.
