How do toll roads work ?
A toll road refers to a road that requires a fee before a driver can cross or drive. The concept of the toll road has been known to be part of ancient history. In Greek mythology, Charon requires a toll to pass if the journey is to the underworld and crossing the river of Styx. An old fable titled “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” also shows the concept of toll road, wherein a troll asks the group that one of them needs to be eaten before they can pass the bridge.
The good news is we do not have to fight or outwit an ogre to pass a toll road nowadays. However, heavy traffic caused by some toll roads has always been a big problem. Collecting a fee in toll roads have been known to help pay for the repairs of the road due to the insufficient funds given by a certain state or country for the upkeep of roads.
There are actually two systems for paying a toll road, the barrier toll system, and the mainline. People entering or exiting a road must pay for using it. Toll fees may have different amounts, but it is usually not more than ten dollars. However, the price may depend on the destination of the vehicle or the place where it’s from. The barrier form of payment can slow the traffic down, since everyone passing has to pay the toll. There are barriers that only charge motorist one way, or for using the road upon entering. An example of this barrier system is the Golden Gate Bridge, it only charge the motorist when they enter from the North of San Francisco, but those who leave San Francisco through the Golden Gate Bridge pays no toll.
Another form of toll road is entry and exit. The system works with the teller, who provides tickets to the motorists that enter the road. The motorists then must present the ticket upon leaving the road and then paying the amount equivalent to the distance of the journey. Using a longer stretch of this toll road system simply means paying a larger amount of fee.
